Coffee Drinking, Just What the Doctor Ordered?

Coffee drinkers can celebrate! A new study authored by the head of clinical electrophysiology research at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and head of electrophysiology at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne has found that coffee just might be helpful to your health. Of course, too much of anything is a bad thing; but they have found that drinking two to three cups a day of certain types of coffee can protect people from both cardiovascular disease and early death.

It’s important to note that the study was observational and that a randomized control trial would be needed to fully prove the relationship. But the information so far is quite promising. The study looked at four groups – ground coffee drinkers, decaffeinated drinkers, instant drinkers and non-coffee drinkers.

Their findings concluded that the largest reduction in early death came from those who drank two to three cups of coffee a day, compared to those who drank none. Ground coffee lowered the risk of early death by 27%, while decaf led to a 14% reduction and instant led to an 11% reduction. The findings for irregular heartbeat were even more surprising with four to five cups of ground coffee a day lowering the risk by 17%; two to three cups of instant coffee lowered that risk by 12%.

Certainly, more exploration is needed into all of these considerations. But it does look promising to drink some controlled amount of coffee a day.

Drink Up & Enjoy Your Coffee Say Researchers

Doctors are finding that there may, indeed, be a benefit to getting your buzz on. Researchers are now suggesting that two cups of coffee a day can help cut the odds of cardiac arrest. The research was conducted by Dr. Murray Mittleman of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and his team.

They took the results of five other students that involved a total of 150,000 people to show that people who drank one or two cups of coffee a day were 11% less likely to develop heart failure than were those who had no coffee in their diet.

Interestingly enough, their research showed that those who had already survived heart attacks had as much benefit from drinking the coffee as did those with healthy hearts.

Heart attack survivors gained as much benefit as those with healthy hearts.

But drinking five or more mugs a day appeared to be bad for the heart, the journal Circulation Heart Failure reports.

The researchers do not, yet, have a handle on why these results are true, but they do have some theories. They believe that coffee helps to reduce the chance of getting high blood pressure and of diabetes – both of which increase the chance of heart failure

Dr. Mittleman explains, “It stands to reason that reducing one’s odds of developing either one of them, in turn, reduces one’s chance of heart failure.”

It looks like drinking up, a bit at least, is good for the heart!

Coffee and Type 2 Diabetes

Research has found that those who drink a lot of coffee have a reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.  According to a report in the ACS’ Journal of Agricultural & Food Chemistry compiled by Kun Huang, Ling Zheng et. al, those who drink at least four cups of coffee per day have a 50 percent lower risk of developing this debilitating disease (which accounts for up to 95 percent of cases of diabetes).  Perhaps even more interesting, each additional Cuppa Joe that is consumed per day brings with it a further 7 percent of reduced chance of being afflicted with Type 2 diabetes.

Coffee Composition

So what is it in coffee that is causing this preventive health benefit?  According to the study, it appears that one of the substances in the beverage is a potential hIAPP blocker.  hIAPP – human islet amyloid polypeptide – could be able to be blocked by a substance contained in coffee.  The researchers have identified two categories of compounds contained in coffee that “significantly inhibit hIAPP.”
