Making It Happen at MSKCC

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Research Center is one of the world’s premier cancer research facilities in the world. Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, MSKCC was founded as the New York Cancer Hospital in 1884, making it the world’s oldest private cancer center. The Center began its move from its original location in 1936 (construction completed in 1939) to its present location on York Avenue on the Upper East Side, as a result of a generous donation of land for the center made by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and became known as Memorial Hospital.

Two executives from General Motors, Alfred P. Sloan and Charles F. Kettering created the Sloan-Kettering Institute, a bio-medical research facility built next to Memorial Hospital. SKI was opened in 1948, and in 1960 it became a formal partner with Memorial Hospital. Today the two are actually a single, unified entity known as the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Today MSKCC is the largest cancer research center in the world, employing over 10,000, with over 700 as Memorial Hospital attending staff and almost 150 SKI members. The center treated over 22,000 patients in the year 2008, and saw almost half a million outpatient visits that year.

An enterprise such as this cannot exist without the generous help of many volunteers and fundraisers, creating and sponsoring events to educate and motivate people to do as much as they can towards this worthy cause. One such event is the Spring Ball, which occurred this past May, 2010, at the Pierre Hotel in New York. Among the several co- chair-people for the event were Jamie Tisch and Tory Burch, with David Yurman acting as this year’s sponsor.

Without dedicated people such as these, the pioneering work of MSKCC would not be possible.
